Message from the Minister to the 2nd ECP Summer Summit on 26 September 2019 in Düsseldorf
Times are changing: Every week, young people around the world appeal to politics, economy and society in favour of an environmentally conscious and sustainable approach to the future. They rightly remind us of the responsibility we have for the life of the generations to come.

As we all know our planets resources are limited and given the fact that a rapidly increasing demographic development will lead us to a world population of more than 9 billion in less than a few decades, we obviously have to rethink and react immediately.
It is certainly one of the great challenges of our time to realise the immense potential of current developments in research and technology to support an innovative dualism of ecology and economy.
The chemical sector in particular brought us prosperity and health over the past 200 years – given the fact that we live in average much longer and suffer less on diseases than our ancestors is an irrefutable proof of that. Today the chemical sector is still a powerful driving force for innovation, progress and a better life. It is now our task to align this remarkable story of success in joint efforts with other technology sectors, predominantly the bio-economy and digitalisation and a comprehensive sustainable management.
And most importantly: not only industry, but also the consumers, will have to learn to think differently in terms of new process chains and a circular economy in mind.
North Rhine-Westphalia is one of the world’s leading regions in chemical research, development and production. With diverse market participants, scientific hotspots and professional cross-linking, our state contributes significantly to a modern, competitive and environmentally conscious chemical industry in the heart of Europe.
For me it is therefore with great pleasure to patronize the ECP Summer Summit again. It is a unique opportunity for fruitful exchange and further collaboration. I am delighted to welcome the chemical industry as well as many representatives from linked industrial value chains such as the health, consumer goods and energy sector here in Düsseldorf and wish everyone a productive and inspiring day.
